Common Laptop Problems and What Usually Causes Them

Laptop Repair Services

From a cracked screen to a laptop that won’t power on, our technicians handle both hardware and software repairs for Windows laptops and MacBooks. Every repair uses quality-tested OEM parts and is covered by our 100-day warranty. Choose a service below to see what’s involved.

Laptop Screen Replacement

Cracked panels, lines across the display, dead pixels, a dim or flickering screen, or a touchscreen that no longer responds. Not every display fault means a new screen. A loose display cable or worn hinge can cause flickering too, and if an external monitor works but the laptop screen doesn’t, the panel is usually the problem. We match the replacement to your laptop’s original panel type, resolution and refresh rate, including touchscreen and OLED models. For common models with the panel in stock, screen replacement can often be done the same day.

Laptop Battery Replacement

A laptop battery typically lasts a few years before its capacity drops noticeably. Signs include shorter battery life, sudden shutdowns at 20% or 30%, or a laptop that only works when plugged in. If the battery is in stock, replacement is usually done the same day.

To check battery health:

  • Windows: open Command Prompt, run powercfg /batteryreport, then compare “Design Capacity” with “Full Charge Capacity”.
  • MacBook: go to System Settings → Battery → Battery Health.

If your trackpad or keyboard is being pushed upwards, the battery may be swelling. Stop using the laptop, unplug it and bring it in, as a swollen battery is a safety risk.

Laptop Keyboard Replacement

Dead keys, keys that repeat, or a keyboard damaged by a drink spill. On many modern laptops, including MacBooks and several Lenovo, HP and Dell models, the keyboard is fixed to the top case, so replacement involves more work than swapping a single part. We tell you exactly what’s involved when we quote.

Charging Port and DC Jack Repair

If your laptop doesn’t charge, charges only when the cable is held at an angle, or the connector feels loose, the charging port may be worn. Older and gaming laptops often use a round DC jack, while newer models charge through USB-C. We test the adapter and cable first, since a faulty charger is a common and cheaper cause.

Overheating, Fan Cleaning and Laptop Servicing

In Singapore, “laptop servicing” usually means an internal clean: removing dust from the fan and heatsink and replacing dried thermal paste, the compound that helps move heat away from the processor. Humidity and dust build up faster here, so a laptop that used to run quietly can become hot, loud and slow within a couple of years.

As a rule of thumb, service an everyday laptop every one to two years, and a gaming laptop more often. Signs you’re due: the fan runs loudly during light use, the base gets too hot to rest on your lap, or the laptop slows down or shuts off under load. Servicing is usually completed the same day.

SSD and RAM Upgrades

Switching from a hard disk to a solid state drive (SSD) is often the single biggest speed boost for an older laptop, with startup and loading times dropping sharply. More RAM (memory) helps if you keep many browser tabs or apps open. Many thin laptops have RAM soldered to the board and cannot be upgraded, so we check your model first and can move your files and system across to the new drive. Most upgrades are done the same day.

Windows, macOS and Software Issues

Slow startup, constant crashes, blue screen errors, a laptop stuck in a restart loop, or suspected malware. We diagnose software faults, reinstall Windows or macOS, and help set things up again. Back up your files first if you still can.

Motherboard and Hardware Repair

When a laptop won’t power on at all, or shows no display even with a working charger, the fault is often on the motherboard, the main circuit board. We diagnose which component has failed and repair it where possible rather than replacing the whole board. For a completely dead laptop, some parts can only be tested once power is restored, so we’ll explain what we can and can’t confirm upfront.

Water and Liquid Damage

Spilled coffee or water on your laptop? Switch it off immediately, unplug it, and don’t turn it back on to check. Avoid hair dryers and rice. Liquid causes corrosion that spreads over time, so bring it in as soon as you can for internal cleaning and assessment.

Hinge and Casing Repair

A stiff or loose hinge, a lid that won’t stay open, or plastic cracking near the hinge. Left too long, a broken hinge can damage the display cable and screen, so it’s worth fixing early.

Data Backup and Recovery

Most repairs don’t affect your files, but we always recommend a backup first. If your laptop won’t start, we can often recover files from a working drive. On many newer laptops, including recent MacBooks, storage is soldered to the board, so recovering data depends on getting the board working again.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Laptop?

Repair usually makes sense when your laptop is otherwise working well and the fix is a single part, such as a screen, battery, keyboard or charging port. An SSD upgrade and a clean can also give an older laptop a few more good years.

Replacing may be the better choice when:

  • the repair costs more than about half the price of a comparable new laptop
  • the laptop is around six years old or more and has several faults at once
  • it can no longer run the software you need, even after an upgrade

We’ll give you an honest view during the diagnostic, even if that means telling you a repair isn’t worth it.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How long does laptop repair take?
Most laptop repairs take 1 to 2 days. Battery replacements, SSD upgrades, servicing and system reinstalls can often be done the same day when parts are in stock. Motherboard and water damage repairs take longer, usually 3 to 7 days after assessment. WhatsApp us your laptop model first and we’ll confirm parts availability.

2. Can you repair my laptop on the same day?
For selected repairs, yes. Battery replacements, SSD and RAM upgrades, laptop servicing and system reinstalls are often completed the same day if the parts are in stock. Send us your laptop model on WhatsApp before coming in and we’ll check for you.

3. Do I pay anything if you can’t fix my laptop?
The diagnostic is free. If we can’t repair your laptop, or you decide not to go ahead after the quote, you don’t pay for the repair.

4. Will I lose my files during the repair?
Most repairs, such as screen, battery, keyboard or charging port replacements, don’t touch your files. Software reinstallation and some motherboard repairs can affect data, and we’ll tell you beforehand. We always recommend backing up first.

5. Will repairing my laptop at a third party shop void the warranty?
If your laptop is still under the manufacturer’s warranty, check with the brand’s authorised service centre first, as opening the laptop elsewhere may affect coverage. For out of warranty laptops, an independent repair is usually the faster and more affordable option.

6. What parts do you use?
We use quality-tested OEM parts. OEM (original equipment manufacturer) parts are made to match the specifications of your laptop’s original parts, so they fit and perform the same way, at a lower cost than parts from the brand’s service centre. Every repair is covered by our 100-day warranty.

7. Can you repair a laptop that won’t turn on?
Often, yes. The cause could be the charger, battery, charging port or motherboard. We test each one to find the fault before recommending a repair.

8. I spilled water on my laptop. What should I do?
Turn it off straight away, unplug it and don’t switch it on to check. Tilt it to let liquid drain, then bring it in as soon as possible. The sooner we clean it, the better the chance of avoiding lasting damage.

9. Should I upgrade to an SSD or buy a new laptop?
If your laptop still has a traditional hard disk and otherwise works well, an SSD upgrade is often the most cost-effective way to make it feel much faster. If the processor is too slow for your work, or several parts are failing, a new laptop may be better value.

10. Do you repair gaming laptops?
Yes, including ASUS ROG, Lenovo Legion, Acer Predator, Alienware and MSI models. Common jobs include overheating fixes, fan replacement, thermal paste renewal, and screen and hinge repairs.

11. Do you offer doorstep laptop repair?
Yes, island-wide. Our technician can come to your home or office for many repairs, such as battery, keyboard or SSD work.

12. Do I need an appointment?
No. Walk in to any of our branches between 11am and 9pm daily. For less common models, WhatsApp us first so we can check parts availability.
